OEP Services
ServicesWherever you live, disaster can strike without warning. Planning and preparation can greatly reduce the impacts disasters (and other lesser emergencies) can have on our lives. Throughout the world, people have a plan and prepare for hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, flooding, wildfires, and other emergencies. California is prone to many kinds of emergencies, including landslides, flooding, wildfires, and earthquakes.
UC Berkeley is located on the Hayward earthquake fault. Seismological experts agree that a major earthquake on the Hayward Fault is likely to occur within the next 20 years. As with any disaster, emergency resources will be overwhelmed and the campus community must be prepared to be self-sufficient until outside help arrives, perhaps for up to 3 days. Each individual should prepare his/her family, home, and workplace for this eventuality.

Emergency Prepardeness Presentations The Office of Emergency Preparedness, in conjunction with Health*Matters at University Health Services, offers regularly scheduled presentations on emergency preparedness for staff, faculty, and students. Presentations are also available upon request for campus departments and faculty, staff or student groups of 10 or more. These presentations are free of charge. Contact the Office of Emergency Preparedness at 642-9036. We also have information about other training opportunities that are available both on campus and in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Earthquake/Emergency Preparedness for Home and Work Every individual needs to take a few moments to prepare his or her family, home, and workplace for an earthquake or other emergency. The Hayward Fault runs though Memorial Stadium and a major earthquake is expected on this fault in the next 20-30 years. This workshop will explore the regional impact of such an event, and some simple and inexpensive things you can do now to reduce the risk of injury and damage in an earthquake. Find out what supplies to keep on hand. Learn how to do a hazard assessment of your home and workplace, and how to remove hazards and secure cabinets, water heaters, and other heavy objects that could fall and cause injury. Learn how to make a family emergency plan and find your family/friends after a major earthquake or other disaster. Find out what training opportunities are available to you for Disaster First Aid, Fire Suppression, Light Search and Rescue, etc. Find out how the campus is preparing for earthquakes and other emergencies. (Co-sponsored by the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Health * Matters at University Health Services.)
