What To Do In Case Of A Power Outage

In the event of a major utility failure:

  • Notify Physical Plant-Campus Services or the building owner if you are off-campus in a leased space.
  • Evacuate the building if the fire alarm sounds and/or upon notification by Police.
  • Do not panic, but evacuate in an orderly manner.
  • Go to your building’s Emergency Assembly Area (EAA) and wait for further instructions.
  • In laboratory buildings:
    • Fume hoods do not operate during a power outage, and many laboratories should not be used until ventilation is properly restored.
    • For more information refer to the EH&S Fact Sheet, “Be Prepared for Power Failures"
  • Building Managers, Building Coordinators and campus officials may call the Physical Plant -Campus Services Utility Hotline at 1-800-979-9995 to check for information from the Utilities and Engineering staff responding to the outage.
