First Aid

First AidAssemble a first aid kit for your home and one for each car/truck/van. A first aid kit should at least include:

  • First aid manual
  • Sterile adhesive bandages in various sizes
  • 2-inch sterile gauze pads (4-6)
  • 4-inch sterile gauze pads (4-6)
  • Hypo-allergenic adhesive tape
  • Triangular bandages (3)
  • 2-inch sterile roller bandages (3 rolls)
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Needle
  • Moistened towelettes
  • Antiseptic
  • Thermometer
  • Tongue blades
  • Tube of petroleum jelly or other lubricant
  • Assorted sizes of safety pins
  • Cleansing agent/soap
  • Latex gloves (2 pairs)
  • Sunscreen
  • Cold packs

non-prescription drugs:

  • Aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
  • Anti-diarrhea medication
  • Antacid (for stomach upset)
  • Syrup of Ipecac (use to induce vomiting if advised by the Poison Control Center)
  • Laxative Activated charcoal (use if advised by the Poison Control Center)

Tools and supplies

  • Crow bar*
  • Utilities shut-off wrench*, to turn off household gas and water
  • Axe, shovel, broom, rope
  • Compass and map of area (for locating shelters)
  • Signal flare and/or whistle
  • Flashlight, extra batteries, lightsticks*
  • Battery operated radio and extra batteries or solar radio*
  • Non-electric can opener, utility knife*
  • Fire extinguisher, small canister, ABC type
  • Tent, tarp, or plastic sheeting
  • Cash or traveler’s checks, change*
  • Plastic tape, papers, pencils
  • Matches in a water proof container
  • Aluminum foil and paper towels
  • Plastic storage containers
  • Barbecue or camp stove and fuel for cooking
  • Garden hose for siphoning or fire fighting

Sanitation

  • At least a quart of non-scented bleach* (replace every six months)
  • Toilet paper, towelettes*
  • Soap, liquid detergentFeminine Hygiene Supplies*
  • Small plastic garbage bags, ties (for personal sanitation uses)
  • Plastic bucket with tight lid
  • DisinfectantHousehold chlorine bleach
  • Newspaper – to wrap garbage and waste
  • Large trash cans
  • Large plastic bags for trash, waste, and water protection

Clothing and bedding

Include at least on complete change of clothing and footwear per person

  • Study shoes or work boots*
  • Rain gear*
  • Blankets or sleeping bags*
  • Hat and gloves
  • Thermal underwear
  • Sunglasses

Special ItemsRemember family members with special needs, such as infants and elderly or disabled persons, and don’t forget your pets.

Suggestions + Reminders

  • Store your kit in a convenient place known to all family members
  • Keep a smaller version of the Disaster Supplies Kit in the trunk of your car and at workKeep items in airtight plastic bags
  • Change your stored water and bleach supply every six months so it stays fresh
  • Rotate your stored food every six months
  • Review your kit and family needs every six months
  • Replace batteries, update clothes, etc…
  • Ask your physician or pharmacist about storing prescription medications

First Aid Mobile or Office KitThis kit would be a preferred kit for athletic facilities, where a forearm splint may also be added.
Kit quantity probably suitable for: 30 office workers, 20 lab or storehouse workers or10 construction workers, laborers.

  • 10 small bandages for minor cuts
  • 4 patch bandages for odd shaped cuts
  • 1" x 10 yds adhesive tape for taping down pads
  • 1 3 x 5 yds elastic bandage for sprains
  • 12 2" x 2" sponge dressings for pressure on wounds
  • 1 watertight medication canister for storage of pills
  • 4 triple antibacterial First Aid cream for preventing infection
  • 12 antiseptic wipes for cleansing skin areas
  • 15 alcohol cleansing pads for cleansing skin areas
  • 6 Povidone-lodine pads for cleansing skin areas
  • 1 scissors for cutting purposes
  • 2 ammonia inhalants for awakening people
  • 1 6" x 10" instant ice pack for reducing swelling
  • 2 large finger tip bandages for finger tip cuts
  • 2 large knuckle bandages for knuckle cuts
  • 4 6" cotton tip applicators for cleaning wound areas
  • 2 2" x 3" Telfa pads non sticking bandages
  • 4 3" x 3" sponge dressing for blocking bleeds
  • 3 finger splints for immobilizing finger
  • 2 2" x 3" island bandages special bandage
  • 2 4" x 4" sponge dressing pads for covering wounds
  • 2 insect bite relief pads for insect bits
  • 1 eye patch for covering wounded eye
  • 1 First Aid Guide instructions on First Aid
  • 1 tweezers for removing objects
  • 2 latex gloves for infection prevention

  • Kit should be checked at least once a month, and items replaced as needed.

  • 1 First Aid guide book for First Aid procedures
  • 1 cold packs for reducing swelling of lumps/bruises
  • 1 triangle bandages for use as arm sling/immobilization
  • 1 ace bandages for sprains/keep immobile limp areas
  • 1 first aid cream for prevention of infections
  • 1 medical scissors for cutting clothes or tape
  • 1 tweezers for removing objects
  • 1 pair of latex gloves for handling injuries involving blood
  • 2 oval eye patches for covering wounded eye
  • 10 antiseptic wipes for cleansing wounded areas
  • 10 Telfa gauze pads 3 x 4 for non sticking large bandage use
  • 4 Telfa gauze pads 2 x 3 for non sticking small bandage use
  • 1 paper adhesive tape _" for taping down bandages
  • 2 rolls of stretch gauze for keeping bandages in place
  • 1 metal box container
